[Re]Awakenings now in print!

Hello again

Yesterday, March 1st 2012, saw the launch of [Re]Awakenings in paperback.

I now have my writer’s copies and, as always, it’s a wonderful feeling for me to see my work in black and white on the printed page.  I do love the convenience of electronic books but there’s nothing to beat the look and feel of a printed book ;-)   Unfortunately, Amazon is being somewhat tardy in updating from ‘pre-order’ to ‘buy now’ but I’m reliably assured that patience is a virtue, so I’ll try to cultivate an air of calm acceptance as I wait for the status to change ;-)

Busy Times

An update:

Life has been hectic lately and I find myself hankering after some free time in which to write.  Plot lines and characters are beginning to invade my dreams and will have to be committed to screen soon, if only for the sake of my remaining sanity ;-)

Since its launch in November [Re]Awakenings has received good reviews – not as many as I’d like, of course, but then the need for reader feedback is a constant niggle for writers.

I’m happy to say that Abiding Evil continues to sell well.  Many thanks to those who’ve bought and read it.  You may be interested to know that the second  of the two books I’m currently working on is another dark thriller.  It’s very early days yet but I am enjoying the familiar challenge of frightening myself ;-)

Devoted Sisters sells, albeit more slowly.  As a psychological study of the lives of two elderly sisters, DS was always going to be hard to categorise and therefore harder to promote to a ‘target’ readership,  but I have a fondness for this, my first book.  My only regret is that I didn’t include an epilogue describing the effects of ergot poisoning, as had been suggested by my editor.  Ah well, we live and learn – editors do know their stuff ;-)

As time and circumstance allow, I’m working to finish my next novel; Female Line.  It’s shaping up as a dark family history; focussing on the life of a woman who falls from a privileged, if lonely, childhood to the desperate isolation of a violent marriage.  As she reflects on the people and the events that have led her here; the good times, the bad, the foolishness and the wrong decisions, she resolves to act.  Her choices are limited, but clear; the story opens with her cradling a large carving knife as she sits in the dark, waiting for her husband to return.

A new title: [Re]Awakenings

Hello!  Long time, no see;-)

A serious family illness now, happily, very much improved, has kept me away from my trusty blog for many months.  Apologies.

To catch up; my most recent news is the e-publication (Kindle and iBook), on 21st November, of four stories in  [Re]Awakenings, an anthology of Speculative Fiction short stories.

Writing in the short story format was a new challenge for me but I must say, I really enjoyed it.  Now, with the book out, a good deal of my time is spent in trying to promote it to an unsuspecting world. This part of the writing process does not come easily to me (I may possibly have mentioned that before ;-)  and I’d like to share a link that was sent to me by fellow writers in the US.   The link is to a wonderful You tube video that explains what’s involved for the hapless writer…

Enjoy ;-)

I can’t quite believe it, but Abiding Evil has been selling really well on Kindle lately.

According to Amazon, Abiding Evil is currently:

#3 in Books > Fiction > Horror > Thrillers
#3 in Books > Fiction > Horror > Occult

Abiding Evil has also made an appearance in Amazon’s Movers and Shakers list, at no. 7.

I am so pleased. You should see my smile ;-)

‘The Exquisite Pain of Wide Eyed Horror’

This is the title of a thoughtful and beautifully written review of Abiding Evil, posted on Amazon by Jon Rosenberg, author of The Unicorn Crisis. He writes:

‘The Exquisite Pain of Wide Eyed Horror’

‘That is what went through my mind as I finished Alison Buck’s Abiding Evil, it is one seriously creepy book….. There are novels which have the power to grip you from their very first sentence, this is one of them. Ms Buck’s writing is superbly balanced, vivid description and tense dialogue, give way to moments of blood soaked action and shattering emotions……. Yet, for all the excellence in delivering the staples of the horror genre, with its creepy setting, crazed antagonist and flavours of the supernatural, what shines through in this book is the plausibility and humanity of its characters……. This is superb horror, wonderfully written, exciting and well paced. A treat for any fan of genre.’

Thank you so much Jon. What a fantastic review!
(The full 5 star review is posted in full on the Abiding Evil page of the Reviews section).

RED NOSE DAY

Hello again

With Red Nose Day* coming up tomorrow, I’m pledging my royalties for UK Kindle sales today and through to Sunday to Comic Relief. I’m also using the good offices of the Amazon’s authors’ threads to encourage other writers to do the same.

I’m hoping to lose as much royalty money as possible to this fantastic cause ;-)

Wish me luck!

* For any non UK readers – Red Nose Day is the main fundraiser for the COMIC RELIEF organisation who do fantastic work helping the poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged in the UK and Africa. Do check out their website for more info.
